Murky waters: Shining a light on Australian squid imports

Squid is one of Australia’s top seafood imports.  With so little information collected on our imported seafood, there is a risk that Australia is importing squid from illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Most of the squid imported by Australia comes from Chinese fisheries, which are contributing to overfishing of squid around the world. These fisheries also exploit their workers through debt bondage, physical and verbal abuse, horrific working conditions and other human rights violations.
